This roundtable discussed the evolving trajectory of India–Canada relations following the diplomatic freeze in September 2023. Despite political tensions, trade remained resilient, with bilateral commerce reaching USD 8.4 billion in 2024. The election of Prime Minister Mark Carney marked a turning point, with renewed diplomatic engagement and a decision to restart Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) talks—seen as a pathway to the broader Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Participants examined how EPTA can anchor economic cooperation amid shared interests in clean energy, digital innovation, and critical minerals. The session also considered Canada’s Indo-Pacific diversification efforts and how India, as a rising regional power, fits into that strategy. In light of China’s growing influence, the roundtable emphasized the need for a resilient, rules-based trade framework to strengthen strategic and economic ties between India and Canada.
