This roundtable discussion examined India’s semiconductor strategy in the context of intensifying global competition and the broader implications of the ‘Chip Wars.’ It analyzed how the 2020 semiconductor shortage and growing US-China tensions had disrupted global supply chains and prompted India to accelerate efforts toward building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem through initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and production-linked incentive schemes.
As initial investments took shape, India encountered several obstacles — including infrastructure constraints, a limited talent pool, and heavy reliance on imports for critical components. With preparations for Phase II of the ISM underway, the roundtable explored how India could enhance its semiconductor capabilities, reduce vulnerabilities, and improve its integration into global value chains.
The discussion aimed to highlight key policy shifts, partnership strategies, and capacity-building measures needed to strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor landscape.
