January 27 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Together with the Dahrendorf Programme at the European Studies Centre, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford, we are hosting a workshop on the theme “India And Europe In A Multipolar World”.
The workshop brings together senior policymakers, strategic thinkers, and analysts from India and Europe to examine the rapid transformation of the global order following the erosion of post Cold War unipolarity. Against the backdrop of intensifying great power competition, economic fragmentation, and contested normative frameworks, participants will assess how India and Europe are redefining their roles, partnerships, and approaches to strategic autonomy in an increasingly uncertain international environment.
The discussions are anchored in the renewed momentum generated by the European Commission’s visit to New Delhi in February 2025 and the adoption of a new Strategic EU India Agenda. The workshop will evaluate prospects for deeper cooperation across trade, technology, security, and defense, while also addressing persistent divergences arising from the Russia Ukraine war, differing threat perceptions, China’s growing assertiveness, and shifting U.S. policies. Particular attention will be paid to whether India and Europe can translate shared interests into sustained strategic coordination amid these constraints.
Through closed door working sessions and public engagement, the dialogue aims to move beyond declaratory convergence toward pragmatic pathways for cooperation. The objective is to generate policy relevant insights and recommendations that can guide India Europe relations in a multipolar and increasingly post American global order.
The workshop is structured around four thematic sessions:
A Post American World Order?
Strategically Autonomous Together? How India and Europe View Each Other
Can We Find Common Ground on Russia?
The China Challenge
