This roundtable discussion examined the impact of President Trump’s second term on India–Europe relations, with a focus on Germany. As the U.S. distanced itself from the transatlantic alliance and the rules-based order, Europe faced heightened uncertainty over its security strategy. The exclusion of Ukraine and EU states from key negotiations deepened the transatlantic rift, prompting a reassessment of Europe’s global role. Germany, at the center of this shift, faced increased scrutiny.
For India, these changes presented both challenges and strategic openings. As a key Indo-Pacific player and partner to both the U.S. and Europe, India was compelled to recalibrate its diplomacy. Germany’s renewed focus on defense under Chancellor Merz and Europe’s pursuit of strategic autonomy had direct implications for India’s engagement. The roundtable explored the evolving India–Germany relationship and assessed how broader geopolitical shifts—such as tensions with China and the U.S.–Russia dynamic—might shape future cooperation.
