The ongoing U.S. presidential race is emerging as one of the most bitterly contested, bewildering, and unpredictable elections in U.S. history, with both parties representing two distinct and opposing visions of America’s future. There is a growing sense that a Trump 2.0 foreign policy will likely be even more unpredictable than his first term, with his position on the Russia-Ukraine war being seen as divergent from the incumbent administration. At the same time, not enough about Harris’ foreign policy approach is known. This discussion seeks to take stock of and assess the ongoing Presidential race as it can determine future policy decisions and broadly set the terms for U.S. engagement with the world.
