This roundtable discussion will explore the case for a formal India–Japan–South Korea trilateral framework amid shifting geopolitical realities. Despite strong bilateral ties and shared interests in critical and emerging technologies (CET), maritime security, and supply chain resilience, no dedicated trilateral mechanism currently exists. This is in contrast to other regional groupings like the Japan–Korea–China and Japan–Korea–U.S. dialogues.
The 2024 Trilateral Policy Planning Dialogue and high-level visits have revived momentum. India’s Act East policy, Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision, and South Korea’s New Southern Policy offer a strong foundation for cooperation. All three countries prioritize sectors such as semiconductors, EVs, and critical minerals—vital for tech sovereignty and economic security. India’s growing manufacturing base also strengthens its role in the “China+1” strategy.
This discussion will explore how a dedicated trilateral CET platform can boost joint R&D, reinforce digital and economic resilience, and advance a rules-based Indo-Pacific order.
