August 13 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
The meeting comprised discussions on the current state of global arms-control and disarmament arrangements. The breakdown of bilateral arms control arrangements between the United States and Russia, as well as adverse developments in the Middle East and Europe vis-à-vis multilateral arrangements such as the NPT and CTBT, show that older normative arrangements have been overtaken by states’ political objectives. Recent and ongoing conflict in these regions, as well as the rising security concerns of states in Southeast Asia, are set to make arms-control and disarmament more challenging in the years to come.
