Theme: Geopolitics and the Changing Nature of Conflict in the Global South: Implications for Track 2 and Track 1.5
The Global South has become increasingly vital in fostering global peace and stability amid complex international challenges. As conflicts persist in various regions, nations of the Global South can leverage their unique perspectives and experiences to contribute positively to conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts worldwide.
In recent years, many Global South countries have witnessed significant socio-political changes. These shifts have impacted inter-state and intra-state dynamics, with geopolitical considerations gaining prominence. While this evolution presents challenges, it also opens avenues for innovative approaches to conflict transformation and regional cooperation.
The changing landscape necessitates a re-evaluation of peacebuilding strategies. Conveners of Track 1.5 and Track 2 dialogues must navigate this evolving context carefully, considering how to effectively engage key stakeholders and promote constructive outcomes. Diverse representation in these processes must be ensured while remaining sensitive to local political realities.
Given these multifaceted changes, such as conflicts, and the contexts in which they occur, there is a pressing need for deeper analysis and understanding among Track 1.5 and Track 2 actors. Exchanging adaptive practices, discussing risk mitigation strategies, and forecasting future developments are crucial steps in enhancing the effectiveness of peace initiatives. The Global South, home to a significant portion of the world’s population, has immense potential to contribute to global peace efforts. By leveraging their diverse experiences and perspectives, nations of the Global South can play a pivotal role in developing innovative solutions to complex conflicts. Through thoughtful engagement and cooperation, these countries can help shape a more stable and harmonious global order that benefits humanity.
This Workshop in New Delhi brought together practitioners, scholars, and experts examining the evolving dynamics of conflict and peacebuilding in the Global South. Over two intensive days of discussions, several central themes emerged that challenge the conventional understanding of conflicts and point toward new approaches in Track 1.5/2 diplomacy. The workshop brought together perspectives from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and beyond, creating a rich dialogue about the future of peacebuilding in an increasingly complex world.
