UDA Workshop III: Submarine Rescue Simulation

Part of Workshop III on Australia–India Underwater Domain Awareness Cooperation, the submarine rescue simulation, designed by CSDR Fellow Dr. Sidharth Raimedhi, tested a joint response to an Indian submarine in distress in the Arafura Sea. The exercise examined coordination, interoperability, decision-making, and operational challenges, with participation from JFD representatives.

Part of the Workshop III: Enhancing Australia-India Underwater Domain Awareness Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, this submarine rescue simulation, designed by CSDR Fellow Dr. Sidharth Raimedhi, formed a key component of the project’s first Expert Exchange. The exercise simulated an Indian submarine in distress in the Arafura Sea and a coordinated India–Australia rescue operation.

The simulation was designed to examine practical questions of bilateral coordination, decision-making, interoperability, and operational response during a submarine rescue contingency. JFD served as an important common link, as both the Indian and Australian navies operate JFD Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs). Representatives from JFD also participated in the exercise, contributing technical and industry perspectives to the discussions.

By placing participants within a realistic operational scenario, the simulation sought to translate broader discussions on Australia–India underwater domain awareness cooperation into a practical exercise focused on submarine search and rescue, coordination mechanisms, and the challenges involved in mounting a joint response.
