This annual CSDR report examines India’s foreign policy shifts in 2024, highlighting major diplomatic recalibrations amid global power competition. Key developments include an unexpected thaw in India-China relations, declining ties with Russia, and challenges in its traditional sphere of influence, particularly in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The report also covers India’s careful balancing act during the Middle East conflict, progress in Indo-Pacific partnerships, and strategic focus on critical minerals and semiconductor development. Throughout 2024, India maintained a pragmatic approach while preserving its strategic autonomy.

Why “power and purpose”?

Purpose gives shape to power and is thereby regenerative, and at the same time, purpose without power is an exercise in despair and thus futile. Therefore, a grand strategy for India must be built by fusing power and purpose. As a think tank, we want to work with our fellow citizens to participate in the effort to create a grand strategy for a rising India. Every year, this report seeks to contribute to that effort.
