Peter Leavy recently retired after 40 years of service as a Warfare Officer in the Royal Australian Navy, holding a variety of positions both ashore and at sea. His seagoing career highlights include two sea commands: HMAS Stuart (2005-6) and HMAS Sydney (2009-11), including Northern Trident 09, a global circumnavigation. Ashore, he has worked in direct support to operations, strategic futures, naval history, maritime strategy/doctrine, strategic personnel management, and representational roles. He spent 2016-2018 in Washington, DC, as the Naval Attaché, then served three years as Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Academy, responsible for the academic education and initial training of just under 1200 Midshipmen and Officer Cadets. He retired as the Chief of Staff at Joint Operations Command, supporting ADF elements executing Operations. He is currently the President of the Australian Naval Institute and is undertaking a part-time PhD program at ANU, exploring contemporary maritime strategy for medium powers, using Australia as a case study.
