Republic of Korea Chair

The India-ROK relationship has evolved significantly, marked by their 2023 Special Strategic Partnership anniversary. While historically limited, shared concerns about China and Indo-Pacific dynamics have strengthened ties. This project aims to enhance understanding and cooperation between the nations through research and policy engagement.

The relationship between India and the Republic of Korea (ROK) is at a pivotal juncture. While historical ties were limited, the evolving geopolitical landscape has brought these two Asian nations closer together. Shared concerns, particularly regarding China’s rise and the evolving Indo-Pacific dynamic, have created a foundation for deeper cooperation.

This potential is further underscored by the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations celebrated in 2023 and the existing “Special Strategic Partnership.” Yet, despite growing governmental engagement, broader awareness and in-depth understanding of the India-ROK relationship remain limited.

This project is aimed at addressing this gap. This initiative will serve as a hub for research, dialogue, and policy engagement, fostering greater understanding and cooperation between the two nations.

Key Objectives:

  • Comprehensive Research: Analyze the full potential and limitations of India-ROK ties, including strategic developments on the Korean Peninsula and the ROK’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
  • Policy Analysis: Examine how India and the ROK can navigate the complexities of the Indo-Pacific, balancing opportunities and risks while diversifying partnerships.
  • Dialogue Facilitation: Foster consistent engagement between the strategic communities of India and the ROK through online platforms, institutional partnerships, and in-person dialogues.
  • Public Awareness: Increase public understanding of the shared strategic environment and policy options faced by both nations.
  • Resource Hub: Serve as a valuable resource for visiting delegations, the ROK Embassy, and policymakers in India.
  • Collaboration: Promote joint research, publications, and events with think tanks and institutions in both countries.

By bridging the knowledge gap and fostering deeper engagement, this ROK Chair will be instrumental in strengthening the India-ROK relationship and promoting regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Areas of Focus:

In addition to the core objectives, the ROK Chair will also delve into specific areas of mutual interest, including:

  • Economic Cooperation: Explore ways to deepen the existing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and promote investment in key sectors.
  • Defense and Security: Analyze potential collaboration in maritime security, defense technology, and counter-terrorism.
  • Science and Technology: Facilitate partnerships in areas such as space exploration, renewable energy, and information technology.
  • Cultural Exchange: Promote people-to-people ties through educational exchanges, cultural programs, and tourism.

By focusing on these critical areas, the ROK Chair will contribute to a more comprehensive and multifaceted partnership between India and the ROK.
